Expanded Library of Employability Skills Activities

Facilitators can select activities from this list to use during Academy makeup sessions, to supplement activities during regularly scheduled sessions, or they can even be used during Pathways Planning time. The table below describes each activity and the suggested unit to incorporate the activity.

Please note that the materials for these activities are only available in English. Facilitators are encouraged to translate and customize the materials for their students' needs.

Verbal and Nonverbal Cues Students will participate in two activities that demonstrate the importance of verbal and nonverbal communication skills, and how it relates to following directions and having successful working relationships.	1 hour	Unit 1
Code of Ethics Using the code of ethics from a professional engineering organization, students will discuss how these standards of behavior guide engineers and the work they produce.	1 hour	Unit 2
Family Influence on Career Choices Students will create a genogram – a pictorial display of family history – to track themes of education and work in their family and then reflect on the stories and messages that emerge.	1 hour	Unit 2
Work Values Matcher Using a card sort, students will learn which workplace values are important to them.	45 minutes	Unit 3
Engineering Role Models Students will identify the attributes of successful engineering and STEM professionals and create and share profiles of.	1.5 hours	Unit 3
Writing an Admissions Essay Students will learn about the purpose of a college admissions essay or personal statement and how to write one.	1.5 hours	Unit 4
Comparing Work and School Habits Students will compare the relationship between school and work habits, and create an action plan for developing good habits.	1 hour	Unit 4
References and Recommendations Whether for educational or work opportunities, students will learn about the importance of having professional references and how to ask for them.	1 hour	Unit 5
Making Campus Connections Students will discover some of the essential resources available at most universities and learn how to create their own support network.	1 hour	Unit 5
